Stockton Subchapter
Welcome to the Stockton Subchapter!
Our group is affiliated with the Sacramento Valley Chapter of CNPS, but we are based in Stockton. Our ongoing projects promote the understanding and use of California native plants in landscapes throughout the Stockton area.
We help maintain the beautiful native garden at Oak Grove Regional Park’s Nature Center, and we have installed and continue to maintain a native flower bed at an intersection in Stockton.
Oak Grove Regional Park's Nature Center Native Garden
Oak Grove Regional Park’s Nature Center Native Garden is located at 4520 W. Eight Mile Road, directly east of I-5 at 8-Mile Road in Stockton.
Members of the Stockton subchapter co-manage the garden with the Oak Grove Nature Center docents. Plants of the Great Central Valley are featured in three habitats: Grassland, Streamside, and Valley Oak Woodland. Many species are those that were used by the Native Americans in earlier times. Visit the garden in late March and early April for colorful displays of bush lupine and golden grassland annuals. Volunteer opportunities are now available! Contact stocktoncnps@gmail.com.
Native Flower Bed Project
Enjoy these photos of our native flower bed on the corner of Yosemite Street and Acacia Street in Stockton! The garden had a great spring bloom!
We installed this garden and continue to maintain it with an all-volunteer group. The purpose of the project is to promote the incorporation of California native plants into our local urban landscape while also providing important wildlife habitat. So far, these native plants are growing in our flower bed:
- showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa)
- narrowleaf milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis)
- sticky monkey flower (Diplacus aurantiacus)
- Cleveland sage (Salvia clevelandii x salvia leucophylla ‘pozo blue’)
- silver bush lupine (Lupinus albifrons)
- California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum)
- California aster (Symphyotrichum chilense)
- great valley gumweed (Grindelia camporum)
- De La Mina verbena (Verbena lilacina ‘De la mina’)
- brittlebush (Encelia farinosa)
- sunflower (Helianthus annus)
